It's never too soon to start grooming your pet. An early start allows your puppy to become more comfortable with the feel of a brush, the sounds of dryers and clippers, feeling comfortable and cooperative on a grooming table and enjoy the sensation of a warm, massaging bath. Pets who start a grooming routine early are more quick to adjust to regular grooming and learn to love the attention and handling of a professional groomer.  Regular grooming visits are vital! The best time to schedule your next appointment is after every grooming session. A shampoo every 4-8 weeks is recommended to keep your pet clean, happy and hygienic. If your pet is accustomed to being outdoors often or around other animals, you may want to consider more frequent bathing. Frequent baths do not harm your pet as long as correct rinsing, conditioning and drying procedures are utlized.

Pets with long coats are often more difficult for owner's to brush on a daily basis. Even if you are able to do so and your pet is quite tolerant, we do recommend a regular grooming visit. Keeping hair trimmed to a moderate length is easier to maintain and often less painful for your pet when grooming is required. If your pet is prone to excessive matting or tangling, a close clip is often recommended. If your pet is prone to excessive shedding, ask us about our FURminator de-shedding program. You will love what we can do for you and your pet!

Dog Grooming Tips
General

Proper grooming is an important part of pet care. It not only makes your pet look better, but contributes to his or her physiological and psychological health.

Coat
Brush your pet thoroughly every day. This helps keep his or her hair in good condition by removing dirt, spreading the natural oils throughout the coat, preventing tangles from forming and keeping the skin clean and free from irritation.

It is best to start brushing your pet at an early age, but do not despair if he or she is an older animal. It is possible to train one to enjoy grooming. Proceed slowly, and be sure to use treats and plenty of praise to make the experience fun!

Nails
Your pet's nails should ideally be trimmed about once per month. Pawsitive Solutions uses clippers designed specifically for the kind of pet you have.

Ears
Ear care is an important part of grooming. Ear infections can not only be painful, but lead to permanent hearing loss. The signs of a problem with your pet's ears can include redness, constant scratching, head shaking and odor.

How to Clean Your Pet's Ears

  1. Check your pet's ears twice per month. The skin inside and on the flaps should be pale pink. If there is a foul odor and/or any red, brown or black skin, have a veterinarian examine your pet's ears.
  2. Moisten a cotton ball with warm water or a little mineral oil and use it to clean the opening into the canal and the flaps. Do not probe too deeply into the canal.
Teeth
Believe it or not, pet's can get cavities and develop periodontal disease like humans. So their teeth should be cleaned with a pet toothpaste at least twice per week. It is best to use a small toothbrush that has soft bristles. Cleanings performed by a veterinarian may also be required. Pawsitive Solutions offers regular dental care in addition to our grooming services. Please ask for more details when you come to visit.
